My Students Gave Me Stuff for Christmas!

This is going to be a very short post. I just wanted to show you my haul for this year, from my students.

First, the big one:

We haven’t actually named hir yet. Gender as yet undetermined.

And then two smaller gifts combined:

Pretty wooden coasters with calligraphy and watercolour pictures, and posh chopsticks in silk sleeves

And finally, the slightly crumpled gourd-y ornament:

A gourdy Christmas to all!

Oh, and the three apples.  I gave one to the cleaning lady at work who always attempts to say Hi to me, so only two left to pose for the photo.

To keep the doctor away!

  • Yay, gifts! I can’t wait to get presents from my students! My question: do students give out presents all the time or do I have to stick around until Christmas? Because that’s going to be a long time to wait until I get my own free gourd-y thingie.

    • Well, so far with Chinese students, I got a few little things at the end of my first 6 month contract, in June. Last year the kids were mean and only gave me a weird fridge magnet with a bell on it. This year’s group of kids has been marvellous on the follow-through.

In Turkey, I got fab presents all the time- but I taught adults in management positions, mostly 1-1 business. Got a lacquered gold bracelet at one point from marketing director of major Turkish petroleum company and a lovely bottle of Anais Anais from my lawyer student at Vodafone. Also got clothes, leather-bound notebooks, pen sets, etc, etc. I miss Turkey!

  • I’d take a picture of my 15 apples and 1 Santa keychain…but it’s not very interesting. I did also get a handful of cute, hand-drawn cards from my little ones, so that was really sweet. Oh! And a lollipop!! Score!!!

    • I teach at a university so gifts aren’t guaranteed, alas! The summer (and winter) holidays are great though– I can’t quite fathom doing any other job, all year round…sounds exhausting.
