Totally Impractical Cookery

I live in China. I like to cook. I hate following instructions. Most of my recipes are useless here anyways.

Watch me attempt to make non-Chinese food using only what I can buy in my local shops in a brand new blog exclusively dedicated to attempting to cook non-Chinese food in China. Click on the image below to go there. It’s going to be…interesting.

Good times!

And as a little retrospective of my Greatest Cooking Hits from this blog, here are some highlights (if you want to call them that…)

  • Brilliant notion (a new blog just for your adventures in culinary mishaps there in China). And I mean… who better than YOU to do it! 😉

Actually, as my own future involves moving likewise to some g-forsaken corner of the globe (Vietnam), I’ll be glued to the new site ‘cuz I worry I’ll not be able to cook what-all/the way I do here at home.

  • This reminds me of my attempt to make egg nog in Africa at Christmas. I was so nostalgic for it and paid nearly $50 for the last bottle of Captain Morgan’s in a shop owned by an Arabian. The eggs were unrefrigerated and I had to replace the cream with UHF milk. It worked, for nostalgic purposes at least. I like to think of it as the moment I rewrote history in Uganda. When the Canadian introduced egg nog to a nation. Ha.

Love this idea. I feel for you!

    • That’s awesome. I’ve not made in that far yet in my experiments- am impressed! I wanted to try to make cheese here (as in aged hard cheese, not fresh, soft cheese) but can’t even get rennet to get it started! Did the eggnog go over well in Uganda?

  • I just love Chinese cooking but unfortunately I’m pretty useless at preparing Chinese food. Indian curries, roasts, Italian, no problem but Chinese – BIG problem.

Don’t know why, I follow recipes to the letter but just can’t seem to get the taste. We could team up and you make the non-Chinese food while I make a total hash of making the Chinese dishes. To be honest I think that I’d be kicked out of the country after one day if they saw what I managed to do to their beautiful cuisine.
